Proverbs 4:1 (Bible Verse of the Day)

Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. Proverbs 4:1

We spend most of our lives having to listen to father’s instructions.  Or mother.  Or coach.  Or teacher.  Or big sister.  Or Boss.

Is it any wonder we have a deep-down resentment to resist submitting to a higher power?  Many examples lay in our past that have led us to pain, anger, and deep distrust of higher authority.  So rare is a higher power that truly loves us, cares for us, and is so selfless that we are able to submit to it blindly.

And then, one day, God comes along.  For most of us, that means we look back on our experience of “listening” to those in charge, and we say “No thanks.  Not another parent.  I’ll do it myself”.

This is especially true for those of us who carry deep wounds.  People like that have figured out a survival technique of only relying on self.  How about this truism: “If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. If you don’t ask anybody for anything or open your heart to them, they can’t hurt you.”.

I spent years avoiding God because I couldn’t stand the idea of His plan being so radically different from mine, that I didn’t want to “sign up” to discover what He really wanted me to do.  I’d rather do things myself.

Looking back, that didn’t go so well.  Why wisdom comes so late… why we need to learn the hard way…

But God is patient and knows you’re on the way.

If you’re reading this and you are still in the “I’m doing it my way” crowd, I understand.  Then there are those that have half committed to God and pick and choose which instructions they’ll follow.

Totally committing to the Will of God is not easy for anyone.  In the meantime, look for one thing.  Just one small change you can make that will at least get you closer to Him.
